Handbag Trends 2026: Easy and Budget Friendly Styles for Spring and Summer

Every spring, I like to look at the trends and figure out which ones actually make sense for real life. Some trends are fun to look at, but they never make it into my closet. Others are simple updates that make your outfits feel fresh without having to buy an entirely new wardrobe.

Handbags fall right into that second category. You can wear the same jeans, the same white tee, and the same neutral sandals you wore last year, but add a new bag, and suddenly everything feels updated.

That’s why I like paying attention to handbag trends. It’s one of the easiest ways to refresh your style without spending a fortune.

Today I’m sharing the Spring and Summer 2026 handbag trends, along with the styles that I think are the most wearable for women over 50.

What is “Out” for Spring and Summer 2026?

I hate to say anything is “out” because if you love it, you should wear it! But if you want to keep your look fresh, here are a few things that are taking a backseat this season:

    1. Tiny Micro Bags: You know the ones I’m talking about. Those tiny little bags that can barely hold a lip balm. They were fun for a minute, but they never made much sense for everyday life. Most of us need room for a phone, keys, reading glasses, and probably a couple of random things we threw in at the last minute. For 2026, practicality is winning. Bags that actually hold your essentials are the ones showing up everywhere.
    2. Heavy Hardware: The oversized chains and giant metal logos we saw everywhere a few years ago are starting to feel a little dated. Instead, designers are leaning toward quieter details. Think interesting stitching, beautiful leather textures, or unique handles instead of loud hardware. It’s a softer, more sophisticated look that feels very wearable.
    3. Neon Colors: Those bright, highlighter-style neons are fading out a bit this year. Instead, we’re seeing softer pastels and classic colors that feel easier to mix into a wardrobe. They still add color, but they don’t scream for attention.
    4. Logo Overload: A subtle logo is fine, but the all-over logo patterns are definitely taking a nap this season. The shift toward simpler designs is part of the whole “quiet luxury” movement that has been trending for a while now.

What is In for Spring and Summer 2026 Handbags?

Now for the fun part. These are the handbag trends I’m seeing everywhere this season, and honestly, most of them are very easy to wear.

Woven and Raffia Bags Are Everywhere for Spring and Summer 2026

Every spring I start reaching for my woven and raffia bags again, and this year there are so many good ones. They instantly make an outfit feel lighter and more seasonal. Even something simple like a white tee and jeans suddenly feels more like a spring outfit when you add a woven bag.

What I like about this trend is that it comes in so many shapes now. You’ll see classic totes, smaller top-handle bags, and even crossbody styles in raffia and woven textures. They look especially good with linen pants, breezy dresses, and all the lighter fabrics we tend to wear once the weather warms up.

Top Handle Bags Are Back in a Big Way

If you like a bag that looks a little more polished, top-handle bags are showing up everywhere this season. These bags have a classic shape that feels timeless rather than trendy.

I like carrying a top-handle bag when I want my outfit to look a little more put together without trying too hard. They look great with dresses, cropped pants, and even a simple jeans and blouse outfit. It’s one of those styles that always feels elegant but is still very wearable for everyday life.

Soft Slouchy Totes Feel Relaxed and Modern

Another handbag style I’m seeing everywhere for Spring and Summer 2026 is the softer, slouchy tote. Instead of those very stiff, structured bags we used to carry, these have a more relaxed shape that feels effortless.

They’re also incredibly practical. You can fit everything you need in them, which makes them perfect for travel days, running errands, or long days out. I love a bag that looks good but still holds everything I need.

Crossbody Bags That Are Stylish and Easy to Wear

Crossbody bags are still one of the most practical styles you can carry, and the newer versions look especially good right now. Many of them have softer leather, curved shapes, and subtle details that make them feel a little more updated.

I reach for crossbody bags a lot when I’m shopping, traveling, or just out for the day because I like having my hands free. They’re easy, comfortable, and they work with just about any casual outfit.

Neutral Handbags That Go With Everything

While you’ll definitely see a few bold colors popping up this season, the bags I find myself reaching for the most are still neutral ones. Shades like tan, cream, camel, and soft beige go with almost everything in a spring and summer wardrobe.

A good neutral bag works with florals, stripes, white jeans, linen pants, and dresses. If you’re only adding one new handbag this season, a neutral tote or shoulder bag is always a smart choice because you’ll end up using it constantly. This one is heading my way on Friday!

Handbag Trend Q&A: Your Top Questions Answered

Q: Are crossbody bags still in for 2026? A: Absolutely! Crossbody bags are a staple for a reason. In 2026, the trend is moving toward “camera bag” styles (smaller, rectangular crossbodies) and “belted” bags that sit right at the waist. They’re perfect for travel because they keep your hands free for holding a gelato or taking photos!

Q: What colors should I look for this spring? A: I’m seeing lots of pastels: baby blue, soft yellow, and powder pink. If you prefer neutrals, “Ecru” and “Cloud Dancer” (a very soft off white) are the way to go. If you like a bolder look, a “Cherry Red,” “Emerald Green,” or “Matisse Blue” bag is the perfect way to make a neutral outfit pop.

Q: Is animal print out for 2026? A: No! Animal print is a neutral in my book. However, for 2026, we’re seeing more “exotic” textures like croc effect and snake effect rather than just leopard print. A crocodile-embossed bag in deep burgundy or forest green is a timeless investment.

    1. I prefer a small handbag because I tend to put too much in a large one making it heavy.

    2. 🙂 Hope you feel better soon! Love the Quince mini bag.

    3. First of all, your grandson is an adorable little chunk! I know how much you must love being around him. I’m using a woven clutch purse these days and I love it. Also wearing wide/leg pants. Those skinny leg jeans are not attractive on me at all.

    4. I like bags of all sizes. Love a raffia bag for spring! I switch a lot!

I like to get a new purse for easy season and there are some great options here! Also, the picture of your new grand baby is just so sweet!!!

    6. I’m a Brahmin girl and have various colors and styles/sizes that I’ve had for years and still love and carry. I also have an Eric Javitz Squishee bag that’s super cute for the summer. Since I like to change bags often, I use an insert which makes it easy. Love the Brahmin you showed!

        1. Haven’t tried a hat yet! i will have to try!

    7. I used to carry a larger bag but in the past year I have switched to crossbody bags. It’s easier and safer when I’m out shopping. Plus I tend to fill up large bags that make them heavy.

      1. When I’m shopping, I switch to a crossbody. Otherwise, I’m always carrying a tote.

    8. Hope you feel better soon, and thanks for the great spring handbag ideas!

    9. 🙂 I prefer the smaller crossbody bag styles.

    10. I love purses but I’m also lazy. I avoid bags that have a flap closure because they require more effort to open. I have purses in all colors, textures, and sizes. I match them to the seasons. Currently I’m carrying a kelly green hobo-style bag from Amazon that I believe you brought to my attention! I also have it in hot pink.

      1. I like using bright colors for handbags. It adds just enough interest to any outfit.
