A GAP Mini Try-On Haul

I’ve styled Old Navy a ton of times, but GAP, which is a sister store, hasn’t been on my radar as much. We have an Old Navy near me, so I guess that is why I’ve tried their clothing the most. I had heard that the GAP store was a little better quality than Old Navy, so I decided to do a GAP Mini try-on haul to see for myself.

This is my idea of a casual, comfortable, weekend outfit. I want something that can be worn around the house, out to the mailbox, or to the store to buy groceries.

I was impressed by this sweatshirt-style vest. It is nice and thick, and very soft and comfortable. The description is that this is a vest, so I guess you could layer it over a long sleeve button-up shirt as the weather turns cooler. I’m wearing a medium, and it is plenty roomy.

I was thrilled when I saw that these jeans were low-rise. Don’t worry; these aren’t “plumber’s crack” showing low, just lower than what we’ve been used to seeing lately. Since I figured these would sit lower on my hips, I ordered up a size, and they fit perfectly. I also ordered Organic Cotton Low Rise ’90s Loose Jeans with Washwell in a size 29, and I couldn’t get them even close to buttoning. They were great looking jeans, but you will need to size up in them.

The next outfit is one that I meant to style with a blazer, but it got delayed, so I decided to take the photos without it. I wanted an outfit that could be worn to work or to a meeting, and I thought a blazer would keep the outfit professional looking.

I’m always looking for a good white T-shirt. I want one that is thicker so that you can’t see through it, and I love a v-neck to make my neck look longer. I have plenty of short sleeve tees that work, but I needed a long-sleeved version for fall and winter. I really love the material, and the feel of this shirt, but I would need to size up if I wore it without a layering piece. I could see my rolls (maybe because the pants were too tight) and I don’t like feeling like I need to “suck it in” all day long.

I loved the look of the pants, but they are way too tight for me. Since I’ve not ordered from GAP very much, I’ve not gotten used to the sizing. It looks like I need to size up in almost everything. I’m not sure if it is their sizing, or if it is my eating habits that are causing the issue. 🙄

I loved everything about this outfit, except the fit was once again off.

The striped crewneck t-shirt is one that I would wear a lot this fall. I could see myself wearing this with a denim jacket or a cardigan, and it would look great with jeans or a denim skirt. The large is too big on me, so it looks sloppy. Sizing down to a medium should fix that issue though.

The color of these khakis is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Unfortunately, they ran a little big, so they also look slouchy on me. I would also have liked them to be a little longer so I could wear them with heels, so I think I’m going to order another pair in a tall and see if I can get a better fit.

I ordered a few other things that just came in, so I didn’t have time to grab a photo. I’ll link to those things below. Overall, GAP does seem to carry higher quality clothing, and since a lot of their styles are classic pieces, you’ll be able to wear them for years. If you want even higher quality, then Banana Republic (another sister store) is the store for you.

I just thought I would mention that when we were coming home from Pigron Forge TN last Sunday we came through Abington, VA. it’s a beautiful little town. The landscaping is beautiful there. We live about 20 miles north of Greensboro NC in a little town called Reidsville, NC. I love your blog and your style. You mention going to TN on your blog right much. It’s a pretty nice drive. Well take care and be well!

  4. I like the vest style. I usual always size down a size when I order or try on at the store. the larger arm holes Mahe it so you can see your bra, so I usual wear a printed cami or demiette (bra) underneath. I wear Ruby Ribbon camis and demiettes. they have such pretty prints. the khaki pants would be great too, exorcism with fall colored shirts. thanks for sharing.

  5. I have ordered a lot from old Navy and Gap. The both carry petite sizes. All the pants and jeans I’ve bought are high waisted. What I discovered is that if pants are mid rise I have to size up. On high waisted I can order the true size of my waist which sits high on me. I didn’t discover this until high waisted came back in style. Midrise pants can give me muffin top if I am not careful. I like all 3 Gap sister stores.

You know, I want to like Gap. They absolutely nail the type of clothes I want to wear in my everyday life. The quality and style is there. But I haven’t shopped there in years. I see the sizing issue hasn’t changed. Back 25-30 years ago, when I was 5’7″ and about 142 pounds, wearing sizes S and M with what weight I had on my hips and very slim up top, I had two Gap tops. The knit one was a clingy (in a good way) size M, and the woven one was XL and barely had enough room. Then they came out with their pagan inspired holiday ad one year, celebrating everything except Christmas and I was out. I would be willing to come back if they were to to fix these issues, but I think they’ve pulled their stores out of my city and I can’t trust the sizing to order online.

  9. So many great ideas. Have a fun visit with your mom and sister…

  10. Gap, Talbots, Chicos etc, all brands, I have been told have a certain body structure/build that they size for when they design and manufacture and I believe it! I have broad shoulders and slimmer hips and it is difficult for me to find tops with buttons that don’t gap and waists that fits without hips with too much fabric. I have found my “go to” brands and stick with those mostly, or I too find the fit is “off”.
