HERE ARE MY FALL WARDROBE ESSENTIAL CLOTHING PICKS
Let’s talk all things fall! Can you say cooler weather, gorgeous foliage, pumpkin spice everything, and cardigans and boots? Now we are talking!!! I love spring and summer, but I think that fall has my heart. If you are a “fall” gurl also, then you are going to love today’s blog post. We are talking Fall Essentials, and this comprehensive list should help you be a styling fashionista this coming fall.
Fall Essentials and Must-Haves
A lot of my essential items might not be items that you like or wear. So, my best advice is to pick and choose what works for you and keep the rest in the back of your mind. Keep an open mind if these are items that you’ve never tried before, but if the items don’t fit your body or lifestyle, then don’t think that they are concrete, written in stone rules. Fashion should be fun and not stressful.
BTW, all photos will be from last fall, so I won’t be linking to the items since they probably are no longer available. The items that I am mostly linking to are from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. That sale ends Sunday, so NOW is the time to take advantage of he last minute rush that will happen. Everything I linked to still had stock, so happy Fall Shopping!
Cardigans and Sweaters
For someone like me who is always cold, cardigans and sweaters are my MUST-HAVES when it comes to fall weather. Actually, I wear cardigans all year round, but fall is my favorite time to throw on a cardigan with almost everything. I use cardigans for warmth and style, but I also use them to help create curves and to hide flaws. I don’t really have a defined waistline (thanks to scoliosis), so a cardigan tricks the brain.
There are lots of styles of cardigans and sweaters. Depending on your body style and height, you can choose from long cardigans, or you can choose one that is shorter. The cropped style is trending in everything which isn’t the best look for me, but it might work for you. I love softness, so I am a huge fan of Barefoot Dreams cardigans and anything cashmere. Some of you might be allergic to cashmere, so once again, do what works for you.
I also love turtlenecks and cowl necks. A turtleneck is what I like, but it isn’t my best look. I have a round face and more chins than I want, and a turtleneck draws attention to those issues. A v-neck sweater is what looks best on me, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t still wear a turtleneck; I will just not wear a turtleneck every day. A cowl neck looks better on me than a turtleneck, so you might try that style if you struggle with a turtleneck also. I know some people find turtlenecks to be confining, and a cowl neck will help with that issue too.
Jeans
I love me some jeans!!! That might not be a grammatically correct statement, but it is how I feel. There are so many choices when it comes to jeans that everyone should be able to find something that you love. More days than not, you will find me reaching for a pair of jeans. I like a wide variety of jeans, and I have all different styles and washes.
You will need to experiment with the different styles to see what works best for your lifestyle and body shape. Straight-leg and relaxed jeans are having their moment, and are extremely popular. However, I see a lot of cropped leg styles and flare jeans also. Don’t forget skinny jeans! They still have a place in your wardrobe, and I feel like you will see more of them this fall and winter because of ankle booties and knee boots. However, if you want to look modern and fresh looking, I suggest that you mix it up and try a lot of the current fashions.
Non-Jeans
Just because I love wearing jeans and they fit my lifestyle, doesn’t mean that they will fit yours. Some of you might not work from home, and you need dressier options. Some of you might prefer lounging pants or leggings, so those options are what you will gravitate toward.
I love Ponte Knit pants because they fit tighter most of the time. I have a black pair of Spanx that I love, and I recently purchased a pair at Kohl’s that are almost identical, but not as expensive. I also love wearing wide-leg dress pants, but you will need to remember to wear a close-fitting top when you style those.
Since I don’t work outside the home anymore, and I very rarely go out where dress pants are called for, I don’t own a ton of dress pants. But, I do have several pairs of chino’s or twill pants, and those can be dressed up to look equally as nice.
Dresses
Speaking of dressing up, most of us need a couple of dresses in our closets. Florals are trending this year, and I love wearing that style of dress for fall. You can add booties with them, or even tights and knee boots as the weather gets colder. I also love animal prints, and you can find leopard, cheetah, zebra, and snakeskin dresses or skirts that look great with boots.
I love midi-length dresses in the fall, and I love pairing them with long cardigans and boots. But, you can experiment with what length works best for you. Either way, have at least one or two dresses available just in case the need arises.
Boots and Booties
Ankle boots are what I love wearing in fall. There are always changing styles, and this year I am loving the platform and lug sole boots. Depending on your needs, you can choose to wear high heel boots, or ones that are flat like a riding boot. Plus, if you live in an area with lots of snow, you can purchase weather-proof boots like Sorel, or warm fuzzy boots like Uggs.
I’m also a big fan of knee boots, and they seem to still be going strong this year. I don’t think that I am seeing as many over-the-knee boots, at least not the thigh-high versions. You can also find weather-proof boots in a tall boot, and I have several Hunter Boots for this reason.
Base Layers
Speaking of cold weather climates, my daughter lives in Alaska, so she does a LOT of layering. It is important to keep your core warm, so she does that with lightweight, long-sleeved. wicking top. Then she adds more layers on top of that. It doesn’t get that cold here in Virginia, especially in the fall, but we can still use her strategy.
Layers can be a camisole or a t-shirt, basically anything to add one more layer of warmth. When fall first begins, you don’t need a heavy base layer since you probably will be also wearing a cardigan, denim jacket, or sweater. But, as the temperatures start to plunge, but might need to wear something more substantial like a turtleneck, long sleeve t-shirts, or even other sweaters if they are thinner.
Scarves
Scarves might not be trending at this moment, but you can’t beat a scarf in the fall. Scarves are great for adding color to your outfit, but they serve a purpose also. A blanket scarf is wonderful for keeping your neck and chest warm, and you can even drape them over your shoulders in a chilly restaurant.
Jackets
Right behind my love for cardigans, is my love for jackets. I love wearing a denim jacket in the fall, and EVERYONE needs one of these extremely versatile jackets. I wear my denim jacket all year round, but they are especially great for fall. A moto (motorcycle style) jacket is another great jacket for fall. I love this jacket, and I think they make you look TEN years younger. You look modern and relevant when you are in a moto jacket, so, what’s not to love?
I have several moto jackets, some are leather, some are suede, and some are faux leather. They all look great in the fall, and you can wear them with jeans, dresses, leggings, etc.
Flats and Sneakers
I have a lot of readers tell me that they can’t wear heels, so flats and sneakers are best for them. Thankfully, brands are starting to give us fashionable choices in flats and sneakers, and we no longer have to leave out the style factor. I’ve never been one to wear running shoes, but I love fashionable sneakers. Those speak my love language!
Handbags
A handbag is one area that I will splurge in. I love handbags, and I love different styles and colors. However, you could easily get by with carrying the same handbag all year round if you choose a neutral one that goes with anything. A good neutral color is taupe/beige, and that will work for any season.
Other neutrals are black, gray, navy, or burgundy/cognac. Black can be a little harsh, but I love a black bag with black jeans or a black moto jacket. So, I have handbags in most of these colors, although my favorite would probably be the taupe and my least favorite would be gray. I don’t have many shoes in gray either, but I have a ton in taupe.
Coats
Coats is another one of those things that your climate will dictate. Colder climates might go toward Thinsulate or puffer coats, while I will go toward a lightweight coat. It has to be below freezing before I even put on a coat, instead, I use sweaters, cardigans, and jackets to keep me warm. But, I do love a wool/cashmere coat for when I go out places that I need to look dressy and still stay warm.
Well, I probably left out a few other essentials, but I think that this list will keep you warm, cozy, and looking stylish this fall.

Hi Tania! I just found your blog today when searching for fall outfits on Pinterest and I’m so glad I did! I love this particular post as I find that I have similar clothing to almost everything you styled and it’s always easier to get dressed in the morning when you have great inspiration! I do have a question I’ve wondered about for quite awhile and that is wearing socks in the winter. I live in Montana where it is very cold, windy and snowy. Is there a stylish way to wear warm socks with anything other than boots or booties? I end up wearing boots from November through March as it’s just too cold to wear sneakers or flats with no show socks and I can’t stand cold feet or ankles. For church I just put away all my beautiful pumps and wear boots. Occasionally I’ll wear tights with dress shoes if I think it looks appropriate. Any suggestions for us gals that want to keep our feet warm but get tired of wearing booties every day for months on end? Sorry for the epistle!
Hi! I love your blog. Do you have a link for the bright pink coat above? I love it!
Some really great looks!
I love your outfits! Could you tell where you purchased the navy blue cardigan and shell? Love the whole outfit!
Patricia, those are all very old outfits, so they are no longer available.
You outdid yourself today! Thank you!! Can’t wait for Fall.
You look fabulous in every picture and outfit! What a great post and scripture. I hope that you’ve had a great day!
I just discovered you on line. I love everything you put together.. My problem is I can’t find clothes that looks good on me. I have a closet full of Talbots that I brought right before covid hit and I can’t wear any of them because I went from a size 12 to a tight 16 and I’m only 5’1. I am a pear shape which makes everything that I try on look horrible!! There were a few things on your web site I thought I might could pull off but I was not able to find them in the clothing store. If you have any tips I could sure use them.
Desperate in North Carolina!!
Wow, what a great post! I think you covered everything that anyone would need in their wardrobe for fall and winter. Can’t pick a favourite because everything looks so great! Thank you so much!
Wow! Thank you for all of this inspiration. Your closet must be amazing. How often do you edit and reorganize? I’m finding many items don’t get worn for a year or two, but I don’t want to purge them yet.
Thank you so much for this post.. I purchased a few items from your links.
Thanks for this fun awesome post! It’s so fun to see all the lovely fall fashions. Since it’s still 109 degrees in Phoenix, fall is a long way off for us, but a girl can dream.
Oh my goodness I loved everything! I have some work to do great post!
Wow- this WAS a lengthy post, but chock full of GREAT info.I’m keeping this one for reference! Thanks!
Boy, I love everything in your wardrobe! As much as I LOVE summer (I’m a teacher lol), I think that fall has the best fashion. You look lovely in everything!
Your post was great!! Loved all the outfits and ideas. I like the easy of summer with milder temps, but I like the style of fall clothing. So I agree. Thanks for all the ideas and pointers! Patti P.
This is one of your best posts! Love all the options, pics, etc! Thanks for giving us ideas to work with 🙂
I am so glad that you loved the post!
Happy Friday…. I love Fall and the cool fresh air. The items you have chosen are also my go to items. Nothing says fall like a comfy sweater and the smell of pumpkin spice!
By the way…. I’ve waited to see if other ladies have this issue with your site…. The pop up screen keeps coming up for me to join. Is this something different than your daily blogs! I hope there’s a way to remove it.
Have a blessed day!
I love fall, too! The smell of pumpkin spice is amazing. If you are talking about the subscription box that is inside my post, that isn’t a pop-up, that is just an easy way for ladies who haven’t signed up for my emails to do that. I added that, not the website.
Excellent post. I can’t even begin to imagine the hard work involved in putting together this post. Thank you for sharing so many options. You looked awesome in every outfit.
Love your posts! Today you mention some slacks you got at Kohls that you like…would you share the brand and details so we can look rhem up? Thanks!
Sharon, I shared all of the info on those slacks on Wednesday. Here is that post. https://50isnotod.com/43921-2/
Thanks, Donna. It was a crazy amount of work. So, I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
Thank you for this listing. I love fall fashions and colors.
I’m glad that you liked it, Cheryll!
You have made me happy to see fall coming! Lots of good ideas here!! Thanks for all your hard work on this post!! I have a question, do you know if they still make HB hairspray? I can’t find it at Target or online??? I know you did some posts for them and I really like their hair products.
Hmmm, I know that Target was having some issues with their website for Hair Biology. But, you can buy it off of Hair Biology’s website, here is the URL. https://hairbiology.us/en-us/shop/style/multi-tasking-hairspray
Great post.
There are so many things I love that you have shown. I am planning on clear out my wardrobe over the next couple of weeks and seeing what I have, what I want to keep and what I want to thrift.
Then I am going to try and put outfits together from what I have – will help me to see if I need to add anything.
Sounds like you have a plan!
Great overview of the fall basics! While I’m not quite ready to give up on summer, I know that fall is around the corner in the Midwest. After losing quite a bit of weight since January, I’m looking forward to trying on what is in my closet (I have a range of sizes!) to see what still works and what can be donated. I’ll be watching your blog for new ideas to supplement what I have.
I am grabbing the fall items while they are on sale. Fall will be here soon, and I am just ordering in the items that I’ll want at a savings.
I just love the sunglasses you are wearing in the picture with Jean jacket, leopard blouse ans tan leggings. Who makes them?
Loved this post….great ideas Tania
Ahhh, Christine, those are a pair from Lilly Pulitzer. They are the Lucia, but they aren’t on the website any longer. But, the Circe (https://shopstyle.it/l/bwYKi) and the Aura (https://shopstyle.it/l/bwYKo) are very similar. Plus, there is a readers pair that also looks similar (https://shopstyle.it/l/bwYKQ)
Wow! That was some post. Super informative. Helping us take a closer look at our closets. Thank you, Tania, for all the time spent putting this together. Very helpful 👏
It was a crazy long time that I spent on this post. Lol!
