HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN

I have the fondest memories of going trick-or-treating when I was a child. We lived in a small town, so there weren’t large subdivisions where you could trick or treat; instead, we went to family members’ homes. I remember driving for hours since no one lived close to each other, but you got the biggest treat bags for your effort.

Seeing my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins were enough of a treat, but I also came away with candied apples, candy, and popcorn balls. I can’t recall ever having to take my treat bags and have them x-rayed, and we never worried about anyone putting something inside the candy.

Then, I became the parent, and I enjoyed going trick-or-treating with my children even more than when I was a child. We still went to friends’ and family’s homes, and they still came away with colossal treat bags. I think I was more upset when the time came for them to stop going out on Halloween than they were. Since we live off the beaten path, we don’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters, so I’ve improvised over the years.

At the lumber company, we used to set up in the parking lot and hand out candy. We would dress in “themes,” and we would have about 300 children come to visit each time. I LOVED it, but the town started doing trunk or treat; our Law School and a church which are next to each other, began doing games, etc., and gradually, the numbers coming got smaller and smaller.

Since we have a new home in a subdivision this year, I hope we get trick-or-treaters. I can’t wait to dress up, hand out candy, and see all of the cutie-pies making memories they will remember a lifetime.

I start thinking about Halloween in September and deciding if I will dress in a costume or just wear a Halloween-themed outfit. I’ve already bought a few cute t-shirts, including this Nightmare Before Christmas tee. In all honesty, I’ve never watched the Nightmare Before Christmas for a couple of reasons. I don’t like scary anything, and two, I’m not a fan of Tim Burton films. I like cutesy, but not scary when it comes to Halloween tees. I’m wearing a large, which is my usual size for t-shirts. I’ll also share some cute ones that I’ve found.

Don’t hate me for wearing distressed/holey jeans! I wore these in my Inside The Dressing Room, Vol. 3 post, and they had to come home with me. I couldn’t help myself when I saw these high-waisted O.G. straight ripped jeans. I like distressed jeans, but not the kind with giant gaping holes. These jeans are okay for me, but I don’t want any with larger holes than these.

Since these are a curvy fit, I sized down (just barely) to a size 8. If you are in-between sizes, you probably want to go with the larger size to be sure. Here are some other jeans for those of you who are not a fan of the distressed look.

You might have seen me wear these embellished faux pearl Chelsea boots before when I did the little black dress worn five different ways post. In that post, I was wearing them with a dress and moto jacket, but today, I am styling them with jeans instead. These boots are cute, fashionable, comfortable, trending, and very modern looking. If you want to be any of those things, then these are the boots for you. I am wearing my usual size 9, so these run true to size. I’ll link to a couple more styles similar to the ones that I have on.

Someone asked about my Halloween nails. As I mentioned earlier, I like cute, not scary, so I picked an adorable skeleton. I thought the black tips with a white stripe were cute and elegant looking, so I went with that. These are my real nails; she paints them and then puts a gel on them for strength. SHe doesn’t file down into my real nail, so they are staying healthy.

Let me share another Halloween story with you. Ashleigh and Joseph were born in October, so we celebrated with a Halloween-themed birthday party. One time, I decided to make a haunted house out of a room that we had made from a two-car garage. The room was quite large, and I covered all the windows and doors with black material, so no light came through them.

I had several stations set up through the room, such as a wicked witch (my grandmother) that cackled and had a pot she was stirring dry ice. Dracula (my brother-in-law) also made an appearance in a homemade coffin that some of the men from the lumber company made.

Plus, I had two plywood tables set up with “food” such as brains, eyeballs, etc., for the kids to see. There was also a tin cake plate that I would raise to show them the “cake” underneath. My sister-in-law was under the table and had her head poking through a hole, so when I raised the tin cake cover, she opened her eyes and screamed at them.

The kids all got the biggest kick out of the haunted house, and they talked about it for years to come. And, they loved my bird dog that ran around in the yard with a sword sticking out of his neck. It all sounds scary now, but it was actually cute, and they loved it all.
