HOW I KEEP ACTIVE AFTER 40
How do we keep active after we are 40? When we first have children, we stay plenty active running after them. Plus, when we are younger, we seem to have soooo much energy, and going to the gym or running for miles seems easy. I am not sure when the keep active gene left me, but if left and I am struggling to get it back.
I’ve read a lot of comments from several of you who never lost the keep active gene, or you found a way to get it back. My hat is off to you because it is not easy to put yourself as a priority. Putting ourselves as a priority isn’t easy since we are so used to putting others first. Children, husbands, grandchildren, and even work usually come before us, which isn’t an easy habit to break.
However, I made a commitment to myself that I will focus on being the best that I can be for the next YEAR. That includes finding my keep active gene, focusing on mental and spiritual growth, and finding joy in the little things. I hope that this inspires you also to put yourself first and become the best you can be.
Walking is the easiest exercise for me, even with my plantar fasciitis issue. I am not going to start running for a loooong time, if ever. But, walking and incorporating other core exercises is on my daily to-do list. While I am able, I will be walking outside, so I thought that I would share my “street” walking outfit.
Since the weather has gotten cooler in the mornings, I usually wear a lightweight sweatshirt and sweatpants. This medium blue raglan sleeve sweatshirt is super soft and very comfortable for walking. I wanted a baggier/looser fit, so I sized up to a large, and I love the fit. This sweatshirt can be worn with jeans or layered with a button-up shirt for a dressier look. Either way that you decide to wear the top, you will be happy with how it looks.
I bought the matching sweatpants, and I am thrilled that matchy-matchy style is back! You can choose to break up the set, but I love wearing them together. These pants are perfect for lounging around the house, or you can wear them as you run errands. They are too nice to be only worn for walking, so make sure that you think of other ways to wear them. I am wearing a large, and I love the fit.
Usually, when I walk, I wear my Brooks GTS 21 shoes (photo below), but today I put on my Tory Burch trainer sneakers. These are on sale for 30% off, so if you’ve been eyeing them, now is a great time to make the purchase. Since they are on sale, sizes are limited, so good luck that your size is available. I am wearing my usual size 9 in the trainers.
In the Brooks GTS 21, I ordered a half size up. My Energizer Bunny Friend, who runs a lot, advised me to size up to give your foot room to move.
When I walk for a longer distance, I want to make sure that I have my phone and some cash. You never know when you will need money, so I always like to have a small amount on hand. Even though my pants have pockets, putting your phone, AirPods, and money in them is not a good idea.
So, when I saw this small convertible crossbody bag, I knew that it was exactly what I needed. I ordered this in the Toasted Terracotta performance twill, but it comes in several prints and colors. You can wear the bag as a true crossbody, or convert it to fit around your waist as I did today. This allows me to carry all of my items and still keep my hands free.
While I was on the Vera Bradley website, I did a little extra shopping. I have a large duffle bag tote that I use traveling back and forth to Abingdon, but I wanted something smaller and more manageable. So, the Tangier Paisley weekender travel bag that matched the handbag that I was carrying the other day was an easy choice for me.
I can pack all of my and Joe’s clothing in these two weekender bags with ease. I loved the Tangier Paisley color, but Joe liked the Toasted Terracotta. I was a little surprised at his choice since I figured that he would choose black. Lucy Lu knows that I am getting ready to leave when she sees me packing my bags, and she makes sure that I don’t leave her behind.

I saw that my sponsored post with Walmart confused some of you. Walmart asked me to try L’Oreal products, and one of the products that I tried was the Midnight Serum. The confusion happened because I am a true lover and user of Rodan + Fields products. Since early 2016, I’ve been using RF products, and I became a consultant to get the best possible price and be able to get them for you also.
I would LOVE for everyone reading this post to use these products, but I know that isn’t going to happen. These products are amazing, they work, but they are on the expensive side. So, I said that I would try other products “for you”, but “I” am going to be using RF!!!
In fact, while I was in Nashville last week, I was invited to a ZOOM call with the founders of Rodan + Fields, Katie Rodan, and Kathy Fields. In the call, someone asked what the number one thing that you could do for your skin. Kathy answered that sunscreen and protecting your skin from the sun was the #1 thing that you could do to help your skin. Katie had a different answer, and it was one that has made me get my butt in gear. She said that “rolling” every night was the best thing to help aging skin.
If you are not familiar with that term, she was referring to the AMP Derma-Roller that I have, but don’t use very often. So, I have decided that for the next 60 days, I am going to faithfully use my roller nightly, along with my regular regimen that I use. If anyone wants to join me in this challenge, you would need the AMP MD System. To help you out with this purchase, I will reimburse you $25.00 when you purchase this as my Preferred Customer. PLUS, at the end of 60 days, I will gift a FREE Intensive Renewing Serum to the person with the best results. That is a gift worth $102.00!!!
Take my Solutions Tool if you want to see what products you might need, and I’ll be in contact with you.
Don’t worry; Lucy Lu never gets left behind when we go to Abingdon. She is a good traveler and never has an accident or gets sick.

Being active promotes a strong body and longevity. As long as we know how to care for ourselves, age is just a number! Thank you for all the tips and advice, and keep on posting!
Where do you do all your filming of your outfits. Looks like Blue GA..?? Love all you do !!!
Hi Tania,
I love your site and enjoy following you on Facebook. I have always kept active but since retiring a little over a year ago, I am exercising regularly. In April I began suffering from PF. A workout friend recommended CorrectToes. They recommend shoes to use with them. I purchased the CorrectToes with the Altra Escalante 2.5. It took about 3-4weeks but I am now pain free. Not inexpensive but it was worth it! Thanks for your wonderful site!
Who makes that pretty blue bathing suit in your cover picture from this post?
It is by Lilly Pulitzer, but I bought it last year and I don’t see it on the website any longer.
That’s great that you’re taking time for yourself Tania
I like to walk for 1.5 hours three times a week along with some hand weights and yoga a couple times a week.
I used to run and loved it but developed PF like you so that’s the end of that.
I use Asics Nimbus 22 running shoes and love them.
I often walk with friends and that makes it more fun. With all the talking my tongue gets a workout too (according to my husband)😂
I have had a gym membership since I graduated from college, wherever I have lived. Check and see if there is a local YMCA in your area. There are lots of beginner and senior activities at the Y. Also, some healthcare plans offer Silver Sneakers free for seniors- it’s a free gym membership! Seven years ago, I started playing Pickleball and love it, especially the social aspect. I walk my dog twice a day and hike when I can. There are always ways to move a little more, no matter your age. Thanks for addressing this Tania!
Hi Tania and Lucy…you’re both looking great! Keeping active after 40 is certainly a challenge, especially since the pandemic started. I love to walk and do so every day for 30-45 minutes but I’ve also fallen in love with Zumba. I discovered Fitness With Cindy on YouTube and she offers a large range of free workout videos for all fitness levels for us “mature” folks.
