Marching, Fighting, Or Supplying – The Goal Is The Same
My mom loves working on our family history. The Ancestry tree she has built is quite impressive and goes back many generations. We were able to use the records she found when I wanted to become a member of the DAR.
She helped me connect all the dots and cross all the tees so that I could be a DAR member. However, my ancestor wasn’t a general or a colonel; he wasn’t even a private. Instead, he supplied items for the war effort, and that counted.
Have you ever noticed that when people share who their ancestors were, they are always famous? As far as I know, we’ve never run across a famous person in our history, and I’m betting that is the same with most people.
A month or so ago, I listened to an online sermon about our purpose in life. The pastor mentioned that people all want these grand purposes in life and might completely ignore the one that the Lord gave them. We can’t all be preachers. Most of us will never write devotional books that are published for millions to read. But, our purpose in life can still be impactful if it is what the Lord gave us.
What if your purpose in life is to raise your children in the church? That isn’t a small accomplishment, and it can have a generational impact. Maybe it is to mentor someone who is struggling. What if your purpose is to sing in the choir? And, possibly, your purpose is to go to your work every day and let the light of Christ shine through you for your co-workers to see!
My ancestor could have wanted a splashy title during the war. He might have dreamed of people remembering his name and telling their children about his accomplishments. He probably thought that the job of delivering supplies was not that important.
The truth is that we need a supply person just like we need a general. Without supplies, the war would have quickly ended. The same is true when it comes to the army for Christ. We all have a purpose against the enemy. You might not feel like you are on the front line, but suppliers are needed in order to win the war. Spoiler Alert: the war is already won!!!
Ephesians 2:10 NIV
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Proverbs 19:21 NIV
21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
Job 42:2 NIV
2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
You have a purpose and a part to play in the Lord’s army. It doesn’t matter if you are marching, fighting, or supplying – the goal is still the same!!!
To GOD Goes The Glory!
Have A Blessed Day!
I always get something out of your Sunday devotional. I hope you are putting these together in a book. What a legacy for your family!!
Love this, thanks!
I strongly believe in the power of one. One person can make a big difference as they obey the leading (and empowering) of the Spirit!
On a totally different topic, thanks for your tips on what to take to Alaska. Hubby & I are going in July.
God bless you this week & congratulations on being inducted into DAR!
Have fun in Alaska! I went for the 4th of July, and it was pretty, but still chilly.
Love this!!
I have also been working on my family ancestry.
I found three family members who listed their occupation as “Baker” on Census Reports from many years ago.
I now attribute my love for baking as a hereditary trait.
That’s so cool!
I love your Sunday posts! Powerful!! God’s Word does not return void!
Grace, peace and many blessings to you.
Good message. Obedience to God in every day things is important.
Absolutely. No matter how insignificant our purpose may seem to us, God uses all of our gifts for His glory.
Every role as a Christian is important. Great illustrating as a reminder.
