IT’S WHO YOU KNOW THAT MATTERS

How many times have you heard the saying, “it’s not what you know; it’s who you know?” I recently read this in a book, and it made me wonder if it was true. The author was talking about how to get ahead in business and was discussing his contact list. He reasoned that the more people you know, the more successful you can become. He then went on to do a little “name-dropping.”

People who “name-drop” are usually trying to impress you. I know such and such, and your reaction is supposed to be, WOW! Most of the time these people do not really know the person they are talking about. And, better yet, the other person does not know them. I once met Mohammed Ali, I had my photograph taken with Al Gore, and I rode in an elevator with Bob Hope. Are you impressed? Do you think any of those people know me? Did they tell anyone that they met ME? Of course not! It was cool to have met these people, but it didn’t make a difference in my life one way or the other.

The one we need to know already knows us. He knows all about us, the very thoughts we think, the things we have done, even the number of hairs on our heads. He made us. He loves us. Do you know HIM?

Jeremiah 1:5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Psalm 139:13

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:1

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.

You have the book He wrote but have you read it? You have His personal cell phone number (prayer) but do you use it? Is His name the name we “drop” when we are trying to impress someone? How well do we really know the Lord?

Sure, we talk about “knowing the Lord,”  which generally refers to having a personal relationship with God. For some, knowing the Lord means making a conscious effort to live in accordance with His teachings and principles. That can look like taking the time to study and reflect on scripture, attend church, and trying to live a good life.

In the end, it REALLY is who you know that counts. And, more importantly, it is who knows you.

To God Goes The Glory!

Have a blessed Sunday!

  1. Hi Tania, I love reading your Sunday posts. when I opened this one up and read the title I thought “she better be talking about Jesus. I have been in the situation of it is who you know to get ahead. I was working for a company for 5 years and ran it when the owners were on vacations. One of their younger friends came in an started taking over like she was the . Well needless to say The male owner was believing her over me. We later found out that that she had been very vey close to the male owner. I could not stay in a situation like that and gave my notice. I am a firm believer that things come to those who wait. It took 6 months for me to find the perfect job. This was during 2020. I know work from home for a man that is like my brother. He treats me like family and with respect. Thanks for all your posts.
