Flattering Petite Outfits for Summer: Styled by a 5’3″ Model
A Petite Model Joins the Team!
A lot of you have been asking for a petite model to join me on the blog, and I’m thrilled to say, your wish is coming true! My beautiful daughter-in-law Stephanie is 5’3″ and she’s officially joining the 50 Is Not Old team to help showcase how some of our favorite pieces fit on petite frames.
Stephanie is a natural in front of the camera, and she shares fit tips, styling ideas, and movement insights in short videos for each look. The videos are muted so you can scroll in peace, but captions are included so you can chose whether to listen or read the information. Whether you’re petite or not, I think you’ll find Stephanie’s insight super helpful.
Let’s jump into the looks!
Matching Short Sets
Stephanie says this Matching Short Set is super soft with plenty of stretch, and the shorts have a relaxed waistband that sits comfortably without pinching. The medium top has a slightly oversized look, but it still gives her waist some shape thanks to the drape. She styled it casually with New Balance Sneakers, which keeps the outfit modern looking.
Why it works for petites:
- The shorts are not too long or baggy,no hem dragging!
- The neckline keeps the upper body balanced and elongates the look
- The matching set draws the eye vertically, adding height
Stephanie also tried the Short Set in a small, which fit more snugly. She noted the shorts in this size are a little shorter and higher-waisted, which can help lengthen the legs visually. Paired with these comfy Double Buckle Sandals, the whole look feels effortless and ready for errands or a casual day out.
Stephanie’s tip: “If you’re in between sizes, the small gives a more tailored look, while the medium is great for lounging or travel days.”

Versatility – Matching Set Styled Multiple Ways
This olive green Matching Vest and Short Set is the kind of wardrobe staple that quietly does a lot of work. The soft pleats give it an elevated shape, and the shorts are roomy but not oversized, perfect for warmer weather and flattering on petite frames. Stephanie styled it multiple ways, and each look shows just how easy it is to dress this set up or down.
Stephanie starts with this tailored vest-and-short combo, which instantly elevates a casual look. On her 5’3″ frame, the vest hits just at the hip, giving her a nice, balanced proportion. The shorts are slightly longer than the previous set, which she notes helps her feel more comfortable wearing them for errands or casual dinners out. The set has structure, but still enough give for movement.

This one surprised even Stephanie, pairing the Vest with a Maxi Skirt gave the outfit a feminine, modern edge. She loved how the vest helped define her waist and added structure to the flowy skirt.
Stephanie’s note: “Petite women can wear maxi skirts. Just make sure the length doesn’t swallow your shoes, and add some vertical structure on top.”
This look is so effortlessly chic. Stephanie paired the Vest with a crisp white Low-Rise Baggy Short and gold-accented Buckle Sandals. The vertical lines of the vest help lengthen her torso, while the high-rise short keeps her legs looking long. The neutral crossbody ties the whole outfit together and adds a bit of texture.
Stephanie’s note: “I really love how tailored this looks without feeling stiff. The vest lays nicely without pulling, and the shorts give me room to move.”
This look shows just how flexible this little Vest can be. Stephanie layers it under a cropped Faux Leather Jacket for fall with Cuffed Wide Leg Jeans that hit perfectly at her ankle. She notes that cropped jackets are a petite woman’s secret weapon, they help break up layers and keep your proportions sharp.
Stephanie layered the Vest over a Loose Fit Tee for a relaxed but intentional look. She says the proportions still work well because the vest creates a vertical line that flatters her shape. The sneakers keep the look grounded and great for everyday wear.
Stephanie’s tip: “Petite ladies, don’t be afraid to layer! Just keep your base fitted or tucked so you’re not overwhelmed by fabric.”
This outfit is ideal for a casual day out or running errands. Stephanie paired the Shorts with a relaxed striped Off The Shoulder Sweatshirt that dips just slightly off the shoulder for a laid-back vibe. The structured waistband on the shorts balances the looser top, and the crisp white Sneakers keep the look clean.
Why it works for petites: A slightly cropped or tucked sweatshirt avoids swallowing up the torso and keeps your frame defined, even in relaxed styles.
Adding a neutral blazer takes this set from weekend to weekday. The structured vest under the Open Front Blazer gives the illusion of height, while the matching Shorts peek just enough to keep it playful but polished. Stephanie mentions that this would work well for a casual Friday or an elevated lunch look.
This combo feels perfect for a dinner on the patio or a casual work-from-home look that still feels pulled together. Stephanie layered the Shorts with a lightweight knit striped sweater and pointed flats that help visually lengthen the legs. The subtle texture and earthy tones create a polished feel without being dressy.
Stephanie’s tip: “If you’re petite, a pointed shoe can go a long way in helping elongate your leg line, especially with mid-length shorts like these.”
Oversized Shirt With Jeans

Bermuda Shorts Styled For Petites
Bermuda shorts can be tricky for petite women. If they’re too long or wide, they can make the legs appear shorter, but when styled right, they’re actually a flattering and modest option for summer. Stephanie tried a few different combinations to show how proportion and fit make all the difference.

This Striped Oversized Button Up Shirt is meant to have an oversized, relaxed feel, and Stephanie embraced the easy silhouette by pairing it with Bermuda shorts and Pointed Ballet Flats. To avoid looking too “boxy,” she tucked in the shirt and added a belt to the look. The sleeves scrunched to the elbow, helps balance the proportions.
Stephanie’s insight: “If you’re petite, oversized doesn’t have to mean sloppy. A partial tuck and showing a bit of leg helps keep the shape flattering.”
Sometimes less is more. This final look is a clean, simple combo of a classic cotton tee tucked into High-Waisted Trouser Shorts. Stephanie noted that this tee is lightweight, not clingy, and easy to layer. The monochrome look adds visual height, and the structured shorts help define her waist.
Why it works: A well-fitted tee tucked into long shorts creates a flattering waistline and lengthens the leg, which is key for petite styling.

Can Petite Women Wear Maxi Dresses or Skirts
This Maxi Dress is a great example of how a longer hemline can still flatter a petite frame. The v-neckline draws the eye upward, and the cinched waist helps create definition. Stephanie mentioned that the material is flowy but not too heavy, and the length works well with flat shoes.
Stephanie’s tip: “If you’re on the shorter side, look for maxi dresses that show a bit of ankle and have a defined waistline, it makes all the difference.”

Elegant Layers with a Skirt & Sweater Vest
This look feels dressy and pulled together without trying too hard. The Chiffon High Waist Maxi Skirt sits above Stephanie’s natural waist and creates a long, flowing line down to her ankles. She paired it with a fitted sleeveless sweater vest, which adds structure and keeps the outfit balanced.
Why it works for petites: The tucked top and defined waistband create an hourglass effect, while the lightweight material allows the skirt to move and drape without adding bulk.

Petite Styling Tip:
When trying longer hemlines, here are three petite-friendly things to look for:
- A defined waist (elastic, belted, or cinched)
- A v-neck or open neckline to lengthen your top half
- Lightweight fabrics that move with you but don’t add width
Vests, Jeans, and Wide-Leg Pants: Casual Summer Style for Petites
Not every day calls for shorts or skirts. Stephanie styled a few laid-back looks with jeans and wide-leg pants to show that petite women can confidently wear looser bottoms, as long as you’re mindful of length and proportion.
This outfit is easy but elevated. Stephanie styled the Chunky Sweater Vest with high-rise wide-leg jeans that are cropped just above the ankle, which is a great way to make wide legs work on a petite frame. She added her Double Buckle Sandals for a soft, neutral finish.
Stephanie’s note: “I love that the vest adds texture without feeling too bulky, and these jeans hit at just the right spot, cropped enough to show ankle but still flowy.”

Casual Style With Wide Leg Pants

Nothing says summer like a pair of Wide Leg High Waist Pants, and Stephanie pulls this off perfectly. The vertical stripe in the Puff Sleeved Tee adds a little extra height visually, and the high-rise pant cinches in the waist before falling away from the body. She kept the accessories simple, letting the pieces speak for themselves.
Why this works for petites: Wide-leg pants in lightweight fabrics paired with a tucked-in or fitted top can actually make you look taller, not shorter.
Final Thoughts on Petite Style
Stephanie did a beautiful job showing how much range petite women really have when it comes to fashion. From shorts and skirts to maxi dresses and wide-leg pants, the key is finding balance, defining your waist, using vertical lines, and choosing pieces that move with your frame, not against it.
Whether you’re 5’3” or 4’11”, you deserve to wear clothes that fit and flatter you, not ones that need constant hemming or tugging. Hopefully, this try-on gave you some inspiration to try new things and feel confident doing it.

I really enjoyed seeing Stephanie in the Nordstrom Sale try on, and am SO HAPPY to see her again in this petite styling session. I wear petite sized clothes. I would not say I have a petite frame, I am just short (just under 5’2”). Her tips were very helpful and I love the videos of both of you because you can see how the clothing drapes and moves on the body. I feel most pictures by most influencers are taken at their best angle photographically but you don’t get to see how the item moves and hangs as you move. Good job gurls! Please include Stephanie as often as possible!

Another petite here, though you have me beat by 1″. 🙂 You’re so right – not being swallowed up in fabrics, and wearing cropped length tops, are two of the most important points of petite dressing. Otherwise, we can wear anything, as you so beautifully demonstrated. Maxi skirts and dresses, and long flowy slacks, are some of my favorite things to wear. Paired with the right tops (fitted, proportioned), makes a really chic look. Tania, she is a great addition to your blog. I’ll enjoy seeing all of her upcoming petite friendly posts. 🙂

Stephanie did great! Finally a blog option for us 5’3″ women. I could not see videos, and the volumn was very low, but I would love to see Stephanie and the format continued.
