Summer Trend – Crochet Tops

Crochet style knit tops are making a stylish comeback this summer, and I couldn’t be happier about it. They bring such a lovely mix of texture, femininity, and breathable comfort, perfect for warm weather and mature skin. If you’ve ever wondered whether this trend works for women in their 50s, 60s, or 70s, the answer is a big yes. Crochet adds interest without being too busy, and when styled the right way, it feels both modern and age-appropriate. Today I’m sharing a few favorite looks featuring crochet tops and easy-to-wear summer shorts c/o Varley, that flatter women over 50 beautifully.

Not every trend is meant for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. One of the best things about personal style is getting to choose what works for you. You can pick and choose the trends that feel right, leave the rest behind, and still look stylish. Adding even just one or two current pieces, like a crochet top or a modern pair of shorts, can help your wardrobe feel fresh and up to date without straying from what makes you feel confident and comfortable. It’s all about striking that balance between feeling like yourself and keeping your look current.

Easy, Breezy, and Effortlessly Polished

Ferns Open Knit Tank (Large) | Ollie High-Rise Short 3.5” (Medium) | Clarks Leather Wedges (TTS) | Double Hoop Earring | Pebble Pendant Necklace | Hayden Chain Necklace

This outfit has that easygoing charm we all want in the summertime; it looks relaxed but still put together. The airy crochet top adds a touch of texture, while the structured shorts keep the silhouette neat and modern. Paired with neutral wedges and simple gold jewelry, the whole look is clean, fresh, and perfect for warm-weather days when you want to stay cool but still feel stylish.

Ferns Open Knit Tank

This airy Knit Tank has a beautiful open pattern that adds just the right amount of texture. It’s soft on the skin and doesn’t cling, which makes it ideal for mature women who prefer breathable fabrics with some ease. The armholes aren’t too deep, and the length hits just at the hip, giving it a clean, polished line whether you wear it tucked or untucked. I’m wearing a nude colored bodysuit that I’ve had for years underneath, but you could wear a neutral cami or tank.

  • Lightweight and breathable for hot summer days
  • Open knit adds subtle texture without bulk
  • Drapes gently to flatter changing body shapes
  • Easy to layer with a tank if you want more coverage

Clarks Leather Wedges

These Leather Wedges are true to size and offer just the right amount of lift without sacrificing comfort. The leather is soft, and the footbed is cushioned, making them a favorite for women who want support with style.

  • Cushioned sole supports aging feet
  • Classic wedge gives height without discomfort
  • Pairs well with shorts, skirts, or summer dresses

Ollie High-Rise Short 3.5″

These High-Rise Shorts are a flattering, modern cut that doesn’t feel too short. The 3.5″ inseam gives a little leg without showing too much, and the high-rise fit helps smooth and shape your midsection. They hold their shape without feeling stiff and pair well with both relaxed and structured tops.

  • 3.5″ inseam for a modest but youthful fit – great for Petites
  • High-rise waist flatters and supports
  • Comfortable stretch without sagging
  • Versatile with tanks, blouses, or sweaters

Sophisticated With a Hint of Boho

There’s a subtle elegance to this outfit that makes it feel a little more refined. The sleeveless vest gives off a tailored yet relaxed vibe, and the slightly longer shorts offer that extra bit of confidence. With a structured bag and soft summer layers of jewelry, the look feels purposeful without being too done. It’s a beautiful balance of comfort and class, just right for lunch with friends or exploring a cute downtown district.

This sleeveless Crochet Vest has a refined feel, with subtle pointelle detailing that’s both pretty and breathable. The neckline and armholes offer great coverage, and the longer length adds a little structure to your look. It works great when worn with my nude bodysuit, but you can layer it over a tank or camisole.

  • Pointelle knit is stylish but not see-through
  • Arm and neck openings are comfortable and modest
  • Length adds polish without looking boxy
  • Great layering piece for warmer weather

Callie Knit Top (Large) | Atrium High-Rise Short 4.5″ (Medium) | Clarks Leather Wedges (TTS) | Double Hoop Earring | Pebble Pendant Necklace | Palmer Necklace | Hayden Chain Necklace | Crossbody Bag – Ivory Silk

If you love a good neutral moment, this outfit is for you. It’s soft, understated, and endlessly wearable. The textured top adds interest, and the neutral palette makes it feel effortlessly chic. It’s one of those combinations that doesn’t try too hard but always looks pulled together. Paired with a lightweight bag and comfy wedges, it’s a go-anywhere kind of look you can dress up or down in seconds.

Callie Knit Top

Callie Knit Top (Large) | Double Hoop Earring | Pebble Pendant Necklace | Palmer Necklace | Hayden Chain Necklace

I bought this same Knit Top last year in beige as part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I love it so much, that I wanted the Egret (cream) color also. This crochet-style knit top is a soft and versatile neutral you’ll reach for again and again. The slightly extended sleeve gives a touch more coverage without adding heat, and the fit is relaxed without being boxy.

  • Soft against your skin
  • Covers the upper arms subtly
  • Relaxed fit that flatters curves
  • Works with everything from shorts to jeans to maxi skirts

Adding The Finishing Touch

Every outfit is finished with simple, elegant accessories that work beautifully for mature women.
Double Hoop Earring | Pebble Pendant Necklace | Palmer Necklace | Hayden Chain Necklace

Every outfit is finished with simple, elegant accessories that work beautifully for mature women. A lightweight option that adds a little shine without pulling on the earlobes. The double hoop detail is modern but not flashy.

This Pebble Pendant has a lovely organic feel, adding interest to your neckline without being too bold. Great for layering or wearing on its own. It looks great worn with the Palmer Necklace that incorporates both gold and silver.

The Hayden Chain Necklace is a simple layering staple that can dress up a casual knit top or add polish to a date-night look. A slightly bolder option that looks great with open-weave tops. The shine draws the eye upward and brightens the face.

Crossbody Bag – Ivory Silk

Light and versatile, this Crossbody Bag adds polish without feeling heavy. The soft ivory tone works with every outfit.

  • Crossbody style keeps hands free
  • Neutral color complements colorful or textured tops
  • Lightweight but big enough for your must-haves

Atrium High-Rise Short 4.5″

These slightly longer High-Rise Shorts are perfect if you want a little extra length without sacrificing style. The 4.5″ inseam offers coverage for the upper thighs, and the tailored cut helps create a clean silhouette. They sit at the natural waist and have a smoothing effect that’s great for mature figures. The fabric is incredibly soft, and you’ll love how they feel. And, as you can see, they have POCKETS!!!

  • 4.5″ inseam offers flattering coverage
  • High-rise waist helps smooth the tummy
  • Slight stretch for all-day comfort
  • Great for dressing up or keeping casual

Fun summer things, but I haven’t had any luck at finding a top that isn’t either too heavy (TX here) or too see-through. I did find a poncho style crochet at Chico’s that will be great for fall transition.

A few days ago, you asked about weekend readership. (Not sure when, we’ve had four family graduations is four weeks.) I occasionally read the Saturday post/newsletter–I did today!–but I don’t read the Sunday. We are retired, but weekends get crazy busy.

😃 I have one crochet top that I thoroughly enjoy wearing. I make sure to wear a bra that isn’t so obvious. I have purchased the Clarks sandals you are wearing and will be wearing them this coming week.

  35. Can you have your assistant try on the striped crochet top? I’m big and have a belly so can’t pictures it on me especially for that price,

  37. Gail Medeiros says:

😊The Callie top is my favorite.

  38. It’s just to hot in Oklahoma to wear 2 layers. As much as I like some of crochet tops I’ve seen, I just can’t stand to wear anything in the summer that requires an underlayer.

  39. Teri O’Brien says:

😀While I do like the Callie top, I’m not too wild about this trend

Not sure this trend is for me, but just to test drive it, I bought a crochet-looking, open knit short sleeve sweater in a neutral color, to wear over a camisole. I do like that matching set in your first picture, I’m really enjoying the monochromatic look right now. 🙂
