When I started blogging, I had no idea just how much I’d talk about bras, lol. But a bra can make or break an outfit. I admit that I’d just soon toss mine on the floor the second I get home, but they are necessary. Wresting into one can be a pain, but a front-closure bra can be a godsend. Today, I’m sharing the best front-closure bras for women over 50.

How to Measure Yourself at Home for a Bra Fitting

Step 1. Find your band size

Here are some basic guidelines I use for a home bra fitting. First off, you’ll need to have a flexible measuring tape to start. You can measure with a thin, non-padded bra on, or you can measure topless. Wrap the tape around you just under your breasts where your regular bra strap would sit. Try to keep the tape level and pull it snug but not too tight. You want to be able to fit a finger under the tape so that the bra doesn’t end up too tight. If the measurement is between sizes, go up to the next size.

An example would be: 35 1/2 should go up to a 36. Here is the weird thing, inches do not equal band size. For some reason, you are supposed to add 4 inches to the measurement to get the band size. So, a 32 measurement would equal a 36 band.

Step 2. Measure your breast size

Now, let’s measure the fullest part of our breasts. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and level, then wrap it around your back, just skimming the fullest part of your breasts. Usually, this will be right over the top of the nipples since that tends to be where our breasts project out the most. You do not want this measurement to be tight.

Step 3. Find your cup size

It is now time to do some math. It is pretty simple, take the bust size and subtract the band size. So, let’s say that your breast measurement was 40, and your band size was 36. You have a difference of 4 inches, but what does that mean? The difference between the two sizes will correspond to the cup size that you need. If there’s a 1-inch difference between bust and band, you’re an A cup; a 2-inch difference is a B cup, 3 inches is a C cup, 4 inches is a D cup, and so on.

The Best Front Closure Bras For Women Over 50 – Spanx

Bra-llelujah!® Lightly Lined Wireless Bra

This is the bra I wear daily!!! I’m a big fan of the Bra-llelujah!® Lightly Lined Wireless Bra by SPANX. It’s pretty from the front, but the all-hosiery back is the real star. It helps smooth out lumps and bumps, of which I have many! Plus, the soft, wide straps mean dig-free comfort all day long.

Adjustable Full Coverage Bra

For women with arthritis, shoulder pain, or limited mobility, (me, me, and me) reaching behind to fasten a traditional bra can be a daily struggle. A front-closure bra eliminates this issue entirely! This is the same brand, SPANX Bra-llelujah!® , but this one is full coverage, not lightly lined. The adjusters are designed to lay flat. This is a great bra to wear under t-shirts for a smooth fit.

Wacoal Perfect Primer Front Close Underwire Bra

I bought my first Wacoal bra years ago at Nordstrom, and I Loved it. Now I always pick up a couple at the Anniversary Sale. The sheer trim on this bra elevates it from just a simple t-shirt bra. The hidden inner sling gives you a natural shape, always a plus, and the comfort wire is tucked away so it won’t rub against your skin. Want more good news? The adjustable straps stay put, so no more slipping off your shoulders. Available in classic colors like Sand, White, and Black, this bra is a comfy and stylish must-have!

There are front closures and there are FRONT closures, lol. This wireless bra offers light support and fits B, C, and D cups perfectly. Made from a stretchy fabric blend, it hugs your body for a smooth fit. The wide shoulder straps stay in place and help reduce back strain, while the front hook and eye closure makes it super easy to put on and take off. It’s also very affordable at under $20 dollars!

The Best Front Closure Bras For Women Over 50 – Skims

Are you familiar with Skims? If you don’t know the brand, you might know the co-founder – Kim Kardashian. She’s used her connections to partner with a ton of celebrities such as Brittany Mahomes and Gwenyth Paltrow. Their campaigns are everywhere! Love her or hate her, she’s a savvy businesswoman. This bralette has a scoop front neckline and fully adjustable straps, helping to fit just right. Made from a soft blend of “polyamide and elastane”, it feels great against the skin.

The Best Front Closure Bras For Women Over 50 – Victoria’s Secret

I remember when Victoria’s Secret first opened its doors. It was iconic! Going to the mall and stopping in to see all the lingerie? Heaven. I still love the silky finery of a store, but there’s more to a bra than looks. Think about what you need most from a bra. Are you looking for maximum support, comfort, or a specific style? Do you have any particular health concerns, such as back pain or shoulder discomfort? Knowing your priorities will help you narrow down your options and choose a bra that meets your needs. This version is lightly lined and provides full coverage. It’s part of their adaptive line to make things easier for anyone with disabilities. Check out the strap adjusters. They are in the FRONT. Yes! Available in 8 great colors!

  1. The adding 4 inches to the band size was done when bras did not have as much elastic. It is my understanding from being measured at Nordstroms that this is no longer done. A great site for how to measure and bra styles is booborbust.com

  2. Team front closure!!! Been wearing them for awhile and won’t go back 🙂

    1. Me, too! I feel weird when I wear a bra that’s not a front closure.

  3. Love this post Tania. Does your favorite Spanx bra have adjustable straps??? I don’t see in photo and does not say so in description.
Thanks for doing the search for us!!

    1. Lori, they do not adjust. There is one that does adjust, but not the one I wear.

  4. Sounds like the pets missed you! I prefer front closure bras. Thanks for this post.

Great post! How about a minimizing bra that lifts? Does one exist? Any suggestions?

    1. I don’t know, Mary Ellen, if one exists.

  9. Rena Berowski says:

I love front close bras. I have not seen anyone cover them before. This is so helpful. I just wish there was a front close strapless bras. Soma has some nice front close bras.

  10. I’ve never had a front closure bra, but what a genius idea. Thanks for showcasing these, Tania!

  11. These are some really great options. Thanks for the recommendations.

  12. I bought two Spanx Bra-lelujah bras after reading your post a few weeks ago & have found them to be very comfortable. Love the wider spaced straps & smooth back. I highly recommend them. 🥰

    1. I am so glad you like the bra! I love the wide straps too, they don’t dig into my skin.

  13. I don’t have a front closure bra. My mother taught me to fasten my bra in the front and just twisted it toward the back. I find it strange to hear not every one does that. When I hurt my shoulder no way I couldn’t have reached towards the back to fasten. Those of you with issues reaching toward your back try what I suggested. It works.

    1. That’s how I put them on too, but I love the front closure so much more.

  14. Bra shopping is worse than bathing suit shopping!🤣 I have a hard time finding comfortable bras in small sizes. Thanks for sharing these.

  15. Thanks for talking about bras. I have been searching for months. This helps to narrow search. And verse of day is just what I needed today.

  16. Oh my goodness! I loathe bra shopping MORE than swimsuit shopping!
Thank you for showing some great options

  17. Thank you! I never have read or heard how to measure for a bra! I like the Spanx wireless.

  18. I like a front closure bra-but I feel like it’s more of a hit/miss with fit (I guess because you can’t adjust the band). I do love the front adjusters – I don’t know why more brands don’t do that? It is so much easier than having to take off then adjust!

  19. I like the front closure black one

  20. Great tips on how to measure for the correct bra size! I love the idea of the magnetic closure but not sure I would totally trust it.

    1. Karen lol. You might have a wardrobe malfunction. It happened to me with a bra that was too big. The bra was in place but my breast was underneath. No one saw anything I hope.

  21. Carol Ann Jablonski says:

I’ve always been able to hook my bra from behind. Alas, no more. Too many tears to my rotator cuffs (swimming); my surgeon said that after the right shoulder replacement I won’t be able to do that anymore. I’ll be looking into your recommendations for front closure bras. Thanks for doing some of the legwork!

    1. My mom is having shoulder issues too, and it is not fun.

      1. MaryJo Lindemulder says:

I hope I can find a bra with your help. I always have a wad of dead space on top of my cups. I hope you understand what I mean….lol! Love your suggestions!!

        1. MaryJo, I do know what you mean. A push up bra will help with some of that issue.

      2. Carol Ann Jablonski says:

I bought the Spanx and have found it to be comfortable.
