The Best Holiday Plaids For The Christmas Season
I love a good plaid in any season for any occasion, but I love the classic during Christmas. According to my extensive research, we have the Scottish to thank for coupling tartan plaid with the holidays. Even Buffalo Plaid, the black and red pattern we wear so often as Christmas pajamas, came from Scotland. Today we’re dressing up, and I’m sharing the best holiday plaids for the Christmas season.
Since I mentioned pajamas, I figured I should show you a family photo from 2019. I found similar red and black plaid family pajamas from Kohl’s. I love that you can pick and choose each family member’s size, and most of their pajamas are available in plus, petite, and tall sizes. They have a lot of PJs to choose from, including buffalo plaid, bright plaids, whimsical, etc. You can find them only online and all in one section HERE.
Your Christmas plaid looks don’t have to be in traditional colors. You can have fun with plaid in colors other than red, green, and black. I love this pink, red, and black plaid blazer! It is a gorgeous color that can be worn more than just for the holidays.
The Best Holiday Plaids For The Christmas Season – Dresses
The Tiered Plaid Shirtdress fits great and is soft to the touch. I love how the dress looks with the black Opaque Tights and slouch boots. I often wear tights as the weather gets cooler and my legs whiter. Unfortunately, the black watch plaid is almost completely sold out, but a buffalo plaid in red or black is still in stock.
Look at this pretty dress from Dillard’s! I love the notched neckline and the short sleeves, and it’s a great length. This would be great for church, office parties, or a neighborhood shindig. Pair it with a black blazer or sweater, and you will be stunning.
Here’s another sharp plaid dress. It’s a very modest silhouette, but pairing it with booties gives it a much more modern feel. The belt is very chic, and this dress has 3/4 length sleeves which so many of you like. You can’t see them, but it comes with POCKETS. Yay! This dress is available in Misses and Plus Size, too.
This is one of my favorite looks! It’s from CeCe, a brand you’ve heard me discuss many times. It’s a one-piece dress made from jersey and wool. I love the puff sleeves and the bow at the neck. It manages to say holiday without screaming Mrs. Clause!
The Best Holiday Plaids For The Christmas Season – Tops
This tartan plaid button-up shirt is a great way to add plaid to your holiday looks. It is festive, but the colors are slightly sedated. You can wear this shirt with jeans for a casual look, or pair it with a shirt and heels for a dressy event outfit. I’ve worn it before with a faux fur vest, and it looked perfect for the holidays.
Here’s a more casual holiday look that utilizes the tartan plaid. It would look great with jeans or a pair of leggings and some black boots. The high-low hem and cowl neckline are nice touches. If you want to elevate the look, throw on a fancy pair of black pants and heels.
This is definitely casual. I’ve featured this green color so that you see a different option if you just don’t love red and black, but it comes in both. Like the top above, this would be great for casual holiday events. Jeans, leggings, and a pair of cute boots would look great. Pair it with a black vest for an even more elevated look.
Can you guess who makes this top? Too easy since it looks so much like the CeCe dress version above, lol. If you don’t have any place to wear the dress, try this cute top. It’s adorable with jeans, but you could also pair it with pants or a nice skirt. It’s just gorgeous!
The Best Holiday Plaids For The Christmas Season – Pants
Is there anything more Christmasy-looking than these plaid pants? I love these pants, and they would look great with a black top and shoes too. Or, keep the red and add a blazer velvet blazer. Now you are talking my language!
Plaid pants are a bold choice, and I am here for it! Gurls, the holidays are not a time to hide in the corner. It’s called festivities for a reason. Let’s get festive with some plaid trousers! You’ll want to wear a cute top with these and some nice shoes so that people don’t think you’re wearing pj’s. Lol! I’d go with a black velvet top and a nice brooch.
How cute are these high-waisted pants with matching bow? They are perfect party pants for the holidays. You could pair them with a black top or go big with a matching red. I always appreciate pockets in pants, and these have two in front and two in back. Love the classic plaid print!
Looking for something festive without the red? These Antonio Melani stretch pants are gorgeous. I love the green and black combination. They would look great with a nice top, but there’s also a matching blazer that looks very chic! This plaid could be worn all winter and not just during the holidays.
For you ladies who don’t want to wear plaid in a blazer, top, or pants, you might like adding a scarf instead. This is a nice festive look, but it isn’t as BOLD as some of the other options. This photo is from 2020, and I still love and wear this scarf. It must be popular because it is still on the website each year.
So, Gurls? Do you typically wear plaid during the holidays? I’d love to hear if this tradition is something you do or not.

I guess I’m not a plaid girl! I didn’t realize it but I looked through my closet after seeing this post, and not one single plaid item.
Love the family photo in your plaid pajamas! Maybe I’ll ease into plaid by buying myself a pair.
Wow, not one single plaid???
I love all the plaid. Once fall starts I bring out my plaid tops with vests and then after thanksgiving it’s red plaids!
Thanks for all the great shares!
