Last year in September, I spent much of the day glued to the television, watching the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Yesterday, I watched the coronation of King Charles III, and I was drawn in by all the pageantry steeped in tradition. King Charles was crowned as King, and his son and grandsons in line for the throne were in attendance as he took the crown. As I watched the service, I couldn’t help but think how it was so different for the King of ALL kings.

Jesus, the King of ALL kings, wasn’t crowned like King Charles. King Charles was crowned with pomp and circumstance, serenaded with a chorus of children in beautiful robes. He placed his loyalty to the church, the state, and the crown, and then was anointed with Holy Olive Oil from a grove of trees that is reported to have been around in the time of Jesus.

A crown of jewels weighing five pounds was placed upon his head, and a gilded robe was placed on his shoulders. King Charles was given a sword, a royal scepter, and an orb. When the two-hour ceremony was over, he rode through the streets in a golden carriage before going to his residence in Buckingham Palace.

Jesus, the King of ALL kings, was not treated similarly. He was born in a manger, with only a few people at His birth. He was treated poorly by the people from His hometown in Nazareth, who tried to throw Him over a cliff to be rid of Him.

Luke 4:24-30

24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

Jesus, the King of ALL kings, started His coronation by riding a donkey, not a horse or in a carriage.

Matthew 21:8-9

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Jesus, the King of ALL kings, received a crown, not made of jewels, but made of thorns. He was mocked, spit on, and beaten.

Matthew 27:29

29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

John 19:19

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Jesus, the King of ALL kings, did not leave in a carriage before going to a palace. Instead, He was placed in a dark, empty tomb for three days. Then, Jesus, the King of ALL kings, rose from the grave before ascending to sit on His throne on the right hand of God.

Matthew 22:44

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’

Jesus, the King of ALL kings, will reign forever. There will be no other King after Him, no passing of the crown to another generation. He alone is the King!

Beautifully written! Love your comparisons. How very different they were treated, yet Jesus has the power to save us from our sins and the other has no power spiritually yet he is glorified.
God bless you for always giving God the glory!

  4. Thank you for your post. Your comparison shows there really is no comparison. When we think about our One True King, Jesus Christ, it makes all the traditional pomp and circumstance from the last couple of days seem quite silly. God bless you.
