Happy Mother’s Day to All the Moms and Mother Figures

First off, I want to wish you a heartfelt Happy Mother’s Day! Being a mother is a blessing, at least most of the time. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, exhausted, or like your children (or your own mother!) are working your last nerve, you’re not alone. It doesn’t mean you love them any less, it means you’re human. So let go of the guilt and give yourself a little grace today.

When Mother’s Day Feels a Little Bit Harder

While the world is celebrating moms with flowers, brunches, and sweet cards, I want to acknowledge those who find this day difficult. Maybe you’ve lost your mother or your child. Maybe you’ve longed to become a mother and haven’t been able to. If that’s you, I see you. You’re not broken. You’re not less than. And you’re not alone.

Grief doesn’t follow a calendar, and neither does longing. So, if today brings tears instead of smiles, know that your feelings are valid. And know that you’re deeply loved.

Shifting Our Focus: Celebrating the First Mother

So, how can we all find a way to celebrate today, even those who are hurting? One way I’ve learned to find peace is by shifting my focus. Instead of dwelling on the pain, I look to the story of the first mother, Eve.

Eve wasn’t perfect. Her story is filled with mistakes that are written plainly for all to see. But before the fall, she walked beside Adam as an equal in the Garden of Eden. She was loved. She had everything she needed. And like many of us, she was deceived. We know how the story unfolds, but imagine for a moment how it must have felt to carry the weight of that choice.

And still, God extended grace.

Eve: A Mother Without a Manual

Eve was the first of many things:

  • The first woman
  • The first wife
  • The first to be tempted
  • The first to sin
  • The first mother
  • And the first mother to mourn the loss of a child

She had no one to call, no book to reference, no shoulder to cry on. She was paving the way, mistakes and all, for every one of us who came after. Her story isn’t just about sin. It’s about resilience. It’s about grace. And it’s about a God who still covered her with love.

A Reminder of God’s Compassion

Even after Eve and Adam sinned, God didn’t abandon them. He clothed them, protected them, and set them on a new path.

“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.”
Genesis 3:21 (NIV)

Yes, they were banished from the garden, but not from God’s heart.

If that doesn’t speak to the kind of love He offers us as imperfect people, I don’t know what does.

To GOD Goes The Glory!

Have A Blessed Day

End with a Prayer

Dear Lord,
Today, we thank You for the mothers in our lives, both present and remembered. We lift up those who are hurting, grieving, or longing for something they don’t yet have. May they feel Your comfort and compassion in a deep and personal way. Help us all to extend grace like You do, when we mess up, when we’re weary, and even when we don’t feel worthy. Let the story of Eve remind us that we are never too far gone for Your love.
Amen.

  7. Thank you so much for this post! I really needed these words today.
I guess I never had thought about Eve and she was the first mother to mourn the loss of a child. And to the tragedy of murder by her other son. Our 29 year old son was murdered 5 years ago on June 3. I’m only standing and functioning because of Jesus and the power of His Word. Thank you for your ministry!

  10. It’s also important and helpful to remember Mother Mary today as we celebrate mothers. She is the true example of Christ’s love and loves us as He does.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to you, the other moms in your family, and to all of them that are part of this community! I chose to not become a mom, so that part, I’m okay with. What causes me pain is that my step son of 31 years doesn’t acknowledge me as a mother figure, even since his mom has passed. I am having to remind myself that God still loves me, and that is what matters most.

  12. Happy Mothers Day Tania! What a great looking family.

  13. Deborah M says:

Happy Mother’s Day. I’ve never thought about Eve this way before. Thank you for another uplifting devotional.

  14. Beautifully written. A great reminder of God’s grace and love even with all my faults and sin! This day was always about my mom even though I have kids myself. So after I lost my mom it’s been hard to accept the celebration for me from my kids. I’m so fortunate to have 3 amazing young adult kids who make me feel so loved. Happy Mother’s Day.

Happy Mother’s Day to you too! Found out a few weeks ago that my youngest daughter is due in November. It is an answered prayer as she has struggled with two miscarriages. She and her husband will be wonderful parents. You are right, being a mother is the most precious blessing. I thank the Lord all the time for my mother in heaven and the two beautiful daughters He blessed me with.

    1. Congratulations! That is wonderful news.

  23. Carolyn (petite) says:

Great devotional Tania. What a refreshing change from what I have typically heard – where the focus is on Eve’s sin, and how women are supposedly “more easily deceived” (despite the fact that the Bible simply stated that she sinned, vs an indictment of her character as somehow being more flawed and prone to sin than men). Instead, you focused on God’s redemptive power and love, about pressing on through life’s challenges, and on showing compassion for those women who are hurting. Thank you! 🙂

    1. Carolyn, I’m so glad you liked this perspective. No one is without sin, so why would we think that Eve would be different.

      1. Carolyn (petite) says:

Exactly, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Eve may have been the first to sin, but we’ve all followed in her footsteps. Sometimes I wonder if certain Biblical ancestors take more of a “beating” over their sins, because it is recorded in Scripture. It’s easy to think, “well if I was in his/her shoes, I wouldn’t have done that”. How wrong we would be. Not sure any of us would want our worst days broadcast on the 5 o’clock news…
