Finding Beauty in Everyday Moments

Fields of grain is a good reminder to think on all things beautiful

Have you ever had a moment where something simple took your breath away? My sister and I were driving to my parent’s house one day, passing a quiet pasture. The wind was blowing, and the uncut hay swayed gracefully in the breeze. It was so peaceful and beautiful and a reminder to think on all things beautiful.

The lyrics from America the Beautiful: “Amber waves of grain,” played in my mind as I kept driving. Moments like that make me stop and think: there is so much beauty all around us. Do we ever pause to take it in? We need to train our minds to see the beauty, even in the smallest things, instead of focusing on the negative.

Evil Has Always Existed, But So Has Beauty

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when the news is full of tragedy and bad news. Maybe you’ve noticed it lately, too—it feels like evil is everywhere. The truth is that evil has always existed, even since biblical times. The Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 1:9 that “there is nothing new under the sun.”

The world has always had its darkness, but here’s the good news: it’s also filled with beauty. There are moments of joy, peace, and wonder all around us if we take a moment to see them. As we continued our drive, I noticed the sunlight dancing on the road through the trees. We were greeted by beautiful wildflowers on the side of the road, and later that night, a gorgeous sunset put on a show. They were great reminders to think on all things beautiful.

You Have the Mind of Christ

1 Corinthians 2:16 KJV
16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

Even with all the evil in the world, we don’t have to dwell on it. Jesus offers us something far better—His mind. Can you imagine that? The same mind that created the stars, the sunsets, and the seasons is offered to you and me.

That mind of Christ is pure, filled with love, and untouched by the troubles of this world. When you feel overwhelmed by life’s challenges, take comfort in this: you can focus on the good, true, and beautiful things in the world because you have the mind of Christ.

Take a moment today to look around and notice something beautiful in your life. Maybe it’s something small, like a smile or a flower. The Lord created the entire world just for us, so thank God for His goodness.

Let’s end with a prayer:

Lord, thank you for offering us your mind. Help me to focus on the beauty around me, even when evil and darkness feel overwhelming. Teach me to rely on your wisdom, not my own. May my thoughts be filled with your goodness and love. Help me to remember that in you, there is no darkness at all. Amen.

Your message is so meaningful to me today! My husband was up before dawn this morning to work with our small herd of cattle and he saw two shooting stars in the early morning sky as he walked through our pasture. Then we received a phone call that my father-in-law (my husband’s step-dad) had passed away. The 2-hour drive to my in-laws’ home was a peaceful, sunny drive on a beautiful Sunday morning. As the sun went down this evening, I sat on the porch and a hummingbird flew right in front of me and hovered for a few seconds. The simple beauty of nature has made this day a little more bearable for me & my husband – and we know my my sweet father-in-law’s soul is now in Heaven .

    1. Jackie, I love all the beauty that was displayed for you in the wake of the death of your FIL. I’ll pray for your family, and that you have lots of wonderful memories to celebrate his life.

  10. Bonnie Hoover says:

Love this! I’m on my way home from Colorado where beauty is everywhere. It occurred to me that the people who live there probably don’t appreciate it like us visitors do. It’s a good reminder to stop and take in the gifts of beauty God has provided us all.

    1. You are right. We can get so used to our surroundings that we take it for granted.

We are blessed and also farm (in Ohio) I love seeing are fields and neighbors changing with harvest of wheat, corn, soybeans and some sunflowers! God Bless you and your family! Have a great week! 17. Beautiful! Thank you Tania!

  18. I think sometimes we have blinders on and forget to look around.

  19. I certainly needed your message today. As a retired teacher my heart is ripped out every time there is a school shooting. I loved teaching all of my 42 years. Every day I put my hand on the door knob of the classroom I asked the Dear Lord to be with my students and me. Every day was filled with the joy of learning and sharing those minutes together. So now I keep those cherished times ahead of the bad news. But boy, it takes awhile to remember those treasured memories when I know the students, parents, and staff are hurting.

    1. Helen, it is so sad that teachers, children, and parents are subjected to this everyday. We all feel like it “could never happen here,” but it only takes one mentally unstable person to destroy others lives and safety.

  20. I live in a section of Arizona (hot and dry) where there are no fields of flowing grain nor many wild flowers along the side of the road … we get cactus instead. But … we have the most gorgeous sunsets I’ve ever seen. And we have them day after day … what a blessing in a dry parched land to see such beauty from the hands of God. Also blessed with a house high enough to look out over the lake and mountains to see these gorgeous “God paintings” from across the whole back of our home.

  21. Ginger Hiller says:

You are so right, Tania! After moving to a very rural part of south central GA in the fall of 2016, I find myself noticing the beauty a lot more than I did during the 60 years I lived in metro Atlanta. Having so much farm land close by and being away from the city lights helps. When I’m in one of the cities we frequent, I do need to work on seeing the beauty more than the negativity around us. I’m wishing you and your family a very blessed Sunday!

  22. Your recent Sunday posts have been very helpful and meaningful for me. My partner of 20 years passed away last week and I have received comfort from your posts by listening to the Lord. Thank you.

  27. Right on target for me, your post today. My husband is struggling with health issues currently and the doctors haven’t had any clear answers. Extremely frustrating and scary for us both. However, just as your lesson says I take in the beauty I’m surrounded by daily and His Word. Thank you.🙏

    1. Nancy, I’m sorry your husband isn’t feeling well. It seems like doctors can find out what’s NOT wrong with us, but have a hard time finding out what IS.

  43. Barbara L. Armacost says:

I live in a rural area and the road I take home from the grocery store goes past soy bean and corn fields. I noticed the other day the wind rippling through the soy beans and thought how pretty it is. But my favorite every year is seeing the corn fields going up and down the hills. It looks like a perfect green and gold carpet. This is my favorite time of the year just because of those corn fields. It’s amazing all the beauty God has placed around us.

    1. I know what you mean, Barbara! The Lord made all of this for our enjoyment, so we need to slow down and enjoy it when we can.

  44. I do try to remember to be thankful for all the beauty around us and the little things. But it’s nice to have a reminder about it also. Thank you

    1. Mom is doing soooo good. She’s not having any real pain, and she’s doing all her exercises.

  49. Yes. The birds are singing this morning, and it has rained so much lately that even the tiny tree frogs are singing. Beauty all around.

  54. Christina says:

    Good morning!
I have been following you for some time now and love everything you do and say. Today your words were especially needed. I’ve been having difficulty explaining to my 16 yr old daughter how and why evil does exist but we have the power to “think of all things beautiful” she has been looking for Gods guidance and seeing the beauty he gives to us daily.
Thank you for always be a constant inspiration for fashion but more importantly my sole.
God bless you and I look forward to your future words of wisdom ❤️
    Have a beautiful day❤️

    1. Christina, it is fabulous that you are training your daughter to look for the good. There has been, and will always be terrible people. But, there has been and always will be good people too. We don’t need to dwell on the negative, especially if we can’t change it.

  55. I like how you think, I walk outdoors everyday and thank our Lord for the beautiful birds, their songs, beautiful trees, grass and the sky. It doesn’t matter what the weather is, God’s world is beautiful everyday.
