WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT
I don’t usually wake up singing a song by Tina Turner. But, for some reason, several days this week, a song has been playing in my mind over and over. I hate it when a song gets stuck in my brain, and this one doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon.
I planned on waiting until closer to Valentine’s Day to talk about LOVE, but it appears that the Lord has other plans. Not only was this song stuck in my mind, but I kept opening up verses on my YouVersion Bible App about LOVE. So, that got me thinking, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”
1 Corinthians 13:13
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Mark 12:30-31
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
If you read these two Bible verses, Love is EVERYTHING! There is no commandment greater than love, love for God, and love for your neighbor. I bet everyone here has read Mark 12:30-31 several times, and if you’re like me, then you’ve struggled with how to love your neighbor as yourself.
The first commandment was to Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul. I wrote a devotion on how I “show” my love for God last year, and I went back and read the post this morning. I still do those same things to show my love for the Lord, so that makes me happy.
I’ve also written about the second greatest commandment, Love your neighbor as yourself. If I’m being honest, that was the part that I found challenging. How could I come to LOVE people who I found unloveable? As I was pondering that question again this morning, it struck me, what if “I” am unloveable?
Romans 5:8
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:19
19 We love because he first loved us.
I don’t like to think of myself as being unloveable, but what if I am the person that someone is struggling to love? My actions and words might be something that my neighbor finds unloveable, and they might be wondering how in the world they are supposed to love me.
While that thought is disturbing, it is even more disturbing to think that the Lord might find me unloveable. I believe that I’ve taken it for granted that the Lord loves me, forgives me, and will never forsake me, but I’m sure I’ve done plenty of things that the Lord is unhappy about.
I’m humbled that the Lord gave His only Son for me, died for me, and arose for me. I’m also thrilled that He loves me even though I’m unloveable at times. It sure makes it easier to love my neighbor, who might have done me wrong, when I think about what I’ve done and how my Lord and Savior still loves me.
Love has EVERYTHING to do with it!

Our church is starting 21 days of fasting and prayer today and they put out a devotion for each day. The first one was about love and then I read your post. I’m thinking God wants me to think about how I love others. Good word.

Another thought provoking post! Do you feel that just because we are instructed to love our neighbors it doesn’t mean that we have to ‘like’ them or their actions?
I like people that I don’t love, and I love people that I don’t always like.

This really hit home for me today! Thank you for this new perspective. I believe that it is similar to how I feel about trust. In order to trust others, I must first be trustworthy. Could I feel a deeper love for others by improving my “lovability”? I think the answer is yes!

Great post. Tania. Love is caring. It’s kind. We can do that. I think there’s a difference between liking and loving. You can love someone because they are human and weak like us. We don’t have to like their ways. This particularly applies to family,😁
I think that liking and loving is where we all get confused. You are right, we don’t have to like their ways to love the person.
